About the role:

As a Technical Writer, you’ll play a pivotal part in transforming complex technical information into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation that support both project delivery and end-user experience.

This is a 12month fixed term full time opportunity, based in our Digital team at Head Office in Wesley Place, Melbourne, where you’ll work closely with technical and business teams to ensure content meets quality, compliance, and accessibility standards. 

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Writing, editing, and proofreading technical content such as manuals, process docs, FAQs, and training materials.
  • Translating complex technical concepts into simple, audience-appropriate language.
  • Collaborating with SMEs, engineers, and stakeholders to gather and validate information.
  • Managing version control and maintaining structured documentation repositories.
  • Ensuring documentation aligns with organizational standards and accessibility guidelines.
  • Supporting knowledge management initiatives like intranet content and self-service portals.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of documentation processes, templates, and style guides.
  • Delivering documentation that supports project KPIs including time, cost, quality, and user satisfaction.
  • Building strong stakeholder relationships to support successful project delivery.
  • Sharing knowledge to uplift team capability and enhance project management practices.

About you:

You’re a detail-oriented, agile communicator with a passion for making complex ideas easy to understand. With strong writing, editing, and research skills, you thrive in fast-paced environments and can manage multiple priorities with ease. You’re comfortable working independently but also enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful documentation.

You bring:

  • Proven experience in technical writing or content development
  • An understanding of AlayaCare (is desired but not essential)
  • Basic understanding software in the Aged Care industry
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to simplify complex topics with an attention to detail
  • Familiarity with technical tools and concepts
  • A proactive, outcome-focused mindset with a drive for continuous improvement
  • The ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and contribute positively to team culture
  • A structured approach to documentation and a commitment to quality, compliance, and accessibility
  • Thrive in a team and also appreciate the one to one interactions

2. Write and Edit Documentation

  • Produces a range of documents, including:
    • User manuals
    • Installation guides
    • API documentation
    • Software help files
    • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • FAQs and troubleshooting guides
  • Ensures clarity, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Writes with the intended audience in mind—e.g., end users, developers, or internal teams.

3. Design and Format Content

  • Uses tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, or Markdown editors.
  • Incorporates visuals (diagrams, screenshots, flowcharts) for better understanding.
  • Structures content logically (using headings, tables of contents, and indexes).

4. Maintain and Update Documentation

  • Keeps documents up-to-date as products evolve.
  • Tracks changes in software versions or workflows.
  • Manages version control and documentation workflows.

5. Work in Agile or Product Teams

  • Often integrated into software development or product teams.
  • Attends standups or sprint meetings to stay informed.
  • May contribute to knowledge bases, internal wikis, or customer support portals.

Skills of a Good Technical Writer:

  • Excellent writing and grammar skills
  • Ability to simplify complex topics
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with technical tools and concepts
  • Basic understanding of the industry they’re writing in (e.g., software, engineering, biotech)
